In 1862 the Albert Memorial Clock was erected in the Square. The base of the clock tower bears the following inscriptions:- West side - "In memory of Albert Prince Consort, born 26th August, 1819; died 14th December, 1861." East side - "This clock tower has been erected by the people of this town and neighbourhood to record their deep sense of the loss the nation has sustained through the death of a good and wise prince and counsellor, and also to express their loyalty to the Queen and sympathy with her in her great bereavement. - John Norrington, Mayor."[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
