Scope and Content
J. W. Hill & Co.'s historical and business directory of Torquay. London and Torquay: J. W. Hill & Co., 1869-70. pp. 199-200.WEST OGWELL. West Ogwell is a small parish adjoining East Ogwell, about three miles south-west of Newton Abbot, seven north-west of Torquay, and eight north-north-east of Totnes; […]This manor was in the family of Pictayensis, but it does not appear to have passed by the same uninterrupted descent as that of East Ogwell. Sir W. Pole says that it was some time held by the Earls of Devon, of whom it was purchased by the Reynells. It is now the property, by present purchase, of Daniel R. Scratton, Esq. Ogwell house, the residence of D. R. Scratton, Esq. was originally erected by Sir Thomas Reynell in 1589, but since that period has been modernised. It is a mansion of considerable appearance, seated on a spacious lawn, neatly skirted by an iron railing, and interspersed with a variety of shady trees and lighter verdure.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
