Thomson, Spencer. Torquay, past and present. London: J. & A. Churchill; Torquay: Seeley, 1877. p. 39.Most true it is that the climate of Torquay, or the climate of Devonshire generally, will not suit all constitutions or all phases of disease, whether of chest or otherwise; if it did, it would be unique as a climate on the face of the globe. Its soothing softness, which some, most frequently people in strong health, complain of, is for many an irritated bronchial membrane, the elixir vitæ; and even that soothing softness may be greatly modified by a residence upon the higher elevations, which feel the sweep of the sea breeze at one time, or the breath of the heather-clad hills of Dartmoor at another.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
