Dugdale, James. The new British traveller or modern panorama of England and Wales. Vol. 2. London: J. Robins & Co. 1819. p.188.The pleasant village and watering-place of Torquay is in the hundred of Haytor, 18½ miles south by east from Exeter. It is situated on a cove, about two miles from the extreme point of the promontory, called Hope's Nose, which forms the northern boundary of Torbay. The buildings are, in general, good; and the accommodation for visitors, convenient. The surrounding scenery furnishes a variety of romantic and picturesque views; and, in this respect, a more agreeable place of residence can scarcely be found on the coast.
