Scope and Content
Daniell, William. A voyage round Great Britain, undertaken in the summer of the year 1813 and commencing from the Land's-End, Cornwall. London: Longman & Co and W. Daniell, 1825. Vol. VIII. pp. 18 - 19.[…] The approach to TORQUAY from Teignmouth presents a singularly varied assemblage of beautiful scenes abounding with wood, rocks, hills, and water, the view of which was at this time much enlivened by the number of vessels near the pier. It may with truth be added, that in no part of the coast of Devon, which had hitherto been visited, was there so much to be seen in so small a compass. The present view was taken from the pathway seen on the hill in the former plate, and includes the two little piers, the villas of Miss Southcote and Captain Lyon on the eminence above the quay, a large extent of the bay, and the promontory of Berry Head in the distance. The harbour, or rather cove of Torquay, is too small for the general purposes of commerce, and is adapted only for the accommodation of coasting vessels employed in the transport of coal and limestone. The village owes its present prosperity to its advantages as a watering-place, which have been considerably increased by the spirited patronage of Sir Laurence Palk and Mr. Cary, the principal landholders of this district. It is much frequented in the usual bathing season, and many visitants are induced, by the salubrity and mildness of its air, to make it their winter residence. There are warm baths for their accommodation, a library and reading-rooms for their amusement, and a country abounding in beautiful and picturesque scenery for more active recreation. If invalids should deem these attractions insufficient without the presence of a medical adviser, it is scarcely necessary to add that Torquay presents no anomaly to that ordinance of fashion, which subjects every watering-place to the tutelage of at least one professor of the healing art. The resident physician here is Dr. Scully, who unites to much scientific ability the general attainments of a scholar and the manners and good taste of a gentleman.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
