Scope and Content
Daniell, William. A voyage round Great Britain, undertaken in the summer of the year 1813 and commencing from the Land's-End, Cornwall. London: Longman & Co and W. Daniell, 1825. Vol. VIII. pp. 15 - 16.The next four views of the series relate to one of the most important of those maritime stations which seem to have been formed by nature on the south coast of Great Britain, for the purpose of enabling her to acquire and to maintain the empire of the seas. From the rich assemblage of picturesque scenery which that noble haven presents, it was difficult to make a selection of subjects which might afford something like a satisfactory idea of the whole. That which comes first in order, entitled TORBAY-CAPT. APPLIN'S, was chosen for the purpose of introducing the Berry Head, which forms the southern, as Hope's Nose forms the northern extremity of the bay, the intervening curve being twelve miles in extent. In the central part of this curve the ground slopes gradually to the water's edge, while the shores on either hand are fronted with ramparts of rock, forming an appropriate boundary to a roadstead, capable of sheltering all the fleets of England in their full array. On the sloping grounds above-mentioned there are woods of luxuriant growth, and even the recesses in the rocks are enriched with foliage. In the present view the vessels seen at anchor in the distance are off Brixham, a place rendered memorable by the landing of William, prince of Orange, on the 5th of November, 1688. The marine villa of Captain Applin has something agreeably fanciful in its aspect, and the situation of it is as appropriate as could have been chosen for the retirement of a British naval officer.
