Scope and Content
J. W. Hill & Co.'s historical and business directory of Torquay. London and Torquay: J. W. Hill & Co., 1869-70. pp. 3-4.Torquay is a district of new and very modern roads, studded with elegant villas, and picturesque grounds laid out with great taste and judgment, and in such a way as to afford a large measure of the adjuncts of domestic enjoyments, in the ordinary sense; therefore, there is little room for improvements in the streets and buildings as compared with towns of longer standing. In these respects, the public spirit of the inhabitants, seconded by the Local Board, and the action of the Lords of the Manors, has recently been induced to vote the sum of £30,000 for street improvements, which are now being carried out under the superintendence of the Board. The shops and places of business are of a high class, and equal to the best and largest places of the same description in any provincial town, and supply articles of ornament and of necessity unsurpassed by London West End shops; many other shops of noble character are in course of erection and opening. The public Baths are of a high character, and occupy an imposing site at the base of Beacon Hill, on the margin of the Bay. The Club on Beacon Terrace, and the Victoria Club on the Parade, afford to gentlemen all the advantages of these necessary institutions. The Hotels are justly famous for their convenience and comfort to the multitude of visitors who flock to this favoured locality.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
