] Torquay is governed by a Local Board of twelve members, three of whom retire annually. It is well drained; well supplied with water, brought from Tottiford, on Dartmoor; has the usual Banking facilities; boasts of Cricket Clubs, Archery Societies, Volunteer Companies, Bazaars, Reading Rooms, (Cockrem's, Croyden's, Hearder's), and a Mechanics' Institute; contains six English churches, one Roman Catholic, one Scotch Presbyterian, and numerous Denominational chapels, with several excellent Hospitals, Infirmaries, and charitable Institutions; and is provided with every facility for the comfort of the visitor in search of health, or the idler in quest of amusement.
