Scope and Content
Daniell, William. A voyage round Great Britain, undertaken in the summer of the year 1813 and commencing from the Land's-End, Cornwall. London: Longman & Co and W. Daniell, 1825. Vol. VIII. p. 14-5.In proceeding along the coast to Torquay, it was impossible to overlook BABICOMBE, situated on the bay of the same name. This romantic little watering-place is deservedly a favourite with those who prefer true seclusion to the questionable delights of merely fashionable retirement; and many families may be said to domesticate here during the season. The genteel cottages (if such a term be admissible) which are so numerous in the neighbourhood, afford abundant evidence of this fact; but though they doubtless combine elegance with comfort, they are in too ornate a style, and have too much prettiness about them to accord with the general character of the scenery. Their number seems likely to increase, for Babicombe must ever continue to be exclusively a water-place, as it has no harbour, and the few fishing-boats which it can maintain will find sufficient employment in the service of the visitants.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
