Cooke, G. A. A topographical and statistical description of the county of Devon. London: Sherwood & Co., c.1830. p. 280. The town is remarkably clean, as a branch of the Lowman is so contrived above the town, as to run with a rapid current through each street; the streets being upon the descent, the water is continually running, and this serves the inhabitants for all domestic purposes; the superfluous water rejoins the Lowman below the town. The stone bridge over the Exe was built in the year 1590, principally by the munificence of one public spirited tradesman, who left a considerable sum to keep it in repair. Some few years ago it was widened, and thoroughly repaired, and is now a very handsome ornament to the part of the town where it stands.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
