Polwhele, Revd. Richard. The history of Devonshire. London: Cadell, Dilly & Murray, 1793-1806. Vol. II. p. 338.TIVERTON is a very large parish, watered chiefly by the Exe, and the Lowman which discharges itself into the Exe. [
]The lands of this parish are generally within small enclosures; the hedges of which are planted with oak, ash, elm, and other timber trees. They are greatly diversified into arable of various kinds, woodlands, orchard grounds, and some rich pastures (particularly in the marshes along the banks of the rivers) all as well cultivated, and shewing [sic] as much knowledge of good husbandry, as perhaps can be seen in any other part of the kingdom, and made as productive by the inhabitants as the different nature of the lands will permit.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
