Harding, Lt. Col. W. The history of Tiverton, in the County of Devon. Tiverton: F. Boyce; London: Whittaker & Co., 1845-7. Vol. I. p. 224. Mr. Heathcoat provides daily occupation to upwards of 1200 hands in his factory, and nearly as many at their own houses, in mending the lace and other incidental operations. The rate of wages varies among the men, from 9s. to 25s; women, 5s. to 9s. or 10s; and from 1s. 6d. to 5s. children, who are not admitted until they have attained the age of ten years, and able to read and write.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
