Crossing, William. The western gate of Dartmoor. London: The Homeland Association, 1903. p. 37.The Town Hall forms the northern portion of the group of buildings we are noticing, and presents a handsome exterior. Like the Guildhall, it was erected by Duke Francis, as also was the market in its rear, the principal entrance to which is close to the abbey gateway. The hall which is approached by two granite staircases, is capable of seating eight hundred persons. It is beautifully decorated, and contains portraits of Lord William Russell, Sir Francis Drake, John Pym, Lord Enfield, Sir John Trelawny, and other celebrities connected with the borough. There were painted by Lady Arthur Russell, as were also the armorial bearings of local families that decorate the walls.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
