Scope and Content
Butcher, Revd. E. The beauties of Sidmouth displayed, being a descriptive sketch of its situation, salubrity and picturesque scenery.[…] Sidmouth: J. Wallis, 1820. pp. 45-46. Proceeding towards the hill, the extremely neat lodge of Peak House, the property and residence of the hospitable Emanuel Baruh Lousada, Esq. is the next object of attention. The drive from the lodge up to the house is uncommonly fine-on the right hand a shrubbery full of fragrance and beauty, through the greater part of which, there is a serpentine foot-path, and on the left an unbroken view of the ocean, at all times an interesting and elevating spectacle. The mansion itself, which has been built by that gentleman, with its grounds and gardens, in which still further improvements are projected, is a delightful abode. It is a considerably elevated situation, and commands a fine reach of the ocean, the white and yellow cliffs of Bere, Charmouth, and Bridport, and the bold promontory of Portland.
