Scope and Content
Hutchinson, Peter Orlando>A new guide to Sidmouth and the neighbourhood. Sidmouth: Thomas Perry, 1857. p. 5. There is, probably, no part of the building so old as the period referred to [1259], except perhaps the chancel, the masonry of which is rude in its construction. The piscina remains in the South wall. The architectural features of the tower and of the body of the Church, assign their date to the Tudor period, or about that of Henry VII. The square head over the flat arch of the west door, set off with quatrefoils bearing shields in the spandrells, the continuous run of the string courses, plinths, and other mouldings, and many other marks of a less prominent nature, all point to nearly the same period. The tower is 75 feet high, from the step at the West door to the top of the battlements.[…]In 1808 the clock face outside the tower was put up; and as it concealed a window of some architectural pretensions, the novelty was complained of.
