Pulman, George P. R. The book of the Axe: containing a piscatorial description of that stream, and a history of all the parishes and remarkable spots upon its banks; with several illustrations, and a map. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1854. Chapter XI. pp. 415 - 416.Shute House, as before stated, was built in 1787-8. It stands in a beautifully wooded lawn, on an eminence which commands an exquisite view of the sea and the lower parts of the valley. The plan of the building is that of a square body with two handsome wings connected with the body by corridors. The entrance has a portico, with Doric columns. Old Shute House was a few hundred yards west of the present building. It was an ancient castellated mansion, in the early Tudor style. The fine old gatehouse, and a few other parts of the interesting old place, remains to show its former extent and consequence. [
]. The village of Shute, which consists of about fifteen houses only, lies in front of the old gatehouse, among lofty trees and a profusion of roses.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
