Scope and Content
Daniell, William. A voyage round Great Britain, undertaken in the summer of the year 1813 and commencing from the Land's-End, Cornwall. London: Longman & Co and W. Daniell, 1825. Vol. VIII. p. 25.In reference to the view IN SALCOMBE RIVER, a very brief explanation will suffice. There is a natural breakwater with a channel on each side, and the little town of Salcombe is situated just round the point. The bank, extending from thence to the mouth of the river, is most beautifully wooded. The shore is rocky, and on one of its most striking points stands Woodville, the seat of Mr. Yates, commanding a delightful view towards the sea. So genial is the climate in this sheltered place, that his gardens produce oranges and lemons, and the olive is growing in a most healthy state in the open air. Fruits of the choicest kinds are in great abundance; and a short time previous to this visit, an aloe, which Mr. Yates had planted about nineteen years ago, was in full blow. Its height was twenty-seven feet, and it bore upwards of 1700 flowers. It is to the mildness, rather than to the heat of the climate, that the thriving state of the exotics introduced here is to be attributed. The thermometer seldom exceeds 76° in the shade in summer, and it is rarely so low as the freezing point in winter. The natural breakwater, already mentioned, forms an effectual protection to the head of the river, against the heavy seas from the south-west, to which it is exposed; and, on either side of the line of rocks which forms this barrier, there is sufficient depth of water to allow vessels to pass in any state of the tide. On the verge of the grounds of Woodville, there is a little cove, where Mr. Yates contrived, as he thought, a secure place for the preservation of fish; but notwithstanding all his efforts for their safety, the sea otter constantly destroyed them.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
