Scope and Content
Daniell, William. A voyage round Great Britain, undertaken in the summer of the year 1813 and commencing from the Land's-End, Cornwall. London: Longman & Co and W. Daniell, 1825 Vol. VIII. p.31.THE CATWATER, as seen from the Citadel, with Mount Batten in the middle distance, forms the subject of the next view. This fine roadstead, which unquestionably derives its name from the Cad, one of its tributary streams, is considered as the embouchure of the river Plym; though from its expanse [sic] it assumes the character of a bay, which receives that stream at its inland extremity. It is sheltered from the violence of south-westerly gales by the peninsula of Mount Batten, and its security has been greatly increased since the construction of the Breakwater. A thousand sail of merchant ships may now ride here in safety; and though it probably never contained so large a number at one time, yet during the late war it often presented the appearance of a crowded haven. For the convenience of vessels frequenting it, mooring chains have been laid down by order of the Earl of Morley. At the different quays on its banks, vast quantities of limestone, raised in the quarries of Oreston, Catdown, and Turnchapel, are shipped for Cornwall and other districts, which are destitute of this valuable material. From the quarries of Oreston is procured the stone used for the construction of the Breakwater. It has already been observed that the vessels employed in conveying and depositing this stone are of a construction peculiarly adapted to the work.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
