Scope and Content
Wright, W. H. K. Illustrated handbook to Plymouth, Stonehouse & Devonport. Plymouth: W. H. Luke, 1879. pp. 4-5.The beautiful Sound spreads out before us in attractive, nay, provoking loveliness; a sight sufficient to tempt even the most timid to venture upon its glassy bosom. But if we essay to engage one of the numerous watermen's boats in waiting, we must, perforce, clamber over rocks and slippery steps in order to reach it, much, I fear, to the annoyance and discomfort of our lady friends, who do not at all times care to travel so rough a road in search of pleasure; for pleasure there is to be had indeed, in spite of the difficulties, whether it be a sober pull close in shore, or a spirited sail to the Breakwater and back, a distance of about six miles.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
