Byers, 1830. p. 40.THE BREAKWATER.This grand national undertaking stretches across Plymouth sound, 1700 yards in length, nearly east and west. The stone is supply from Oreston quarries, adjoining Catwater. A surface of the rock, about 25 acres, was purchased of the Duke of Bedford for £10,000 in August, 1812. Quays were immediately erected, railways laid down, vessels of about 60 tons and immense strength were built for the purpose of conveying the stone to the sound and the work began.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
