] The first stone of the Breakwater was deposited on the 12th of April, 1812. By the following March the works were so far advanced that parts of its irregular surface were seen above low water. It was originally intended to erect a lighthouse at each end of the Breakwater. It was afterwards determined to erect a beacon at the east end and a lighthouse at the west.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
