Scope and Content
The stranger's handbook to Plymouth, Devonport, Stonehouse, River Tamar, and vicinities. Devonport: W. Wood, 1850. Fifth Edition. p. 20.ROYAL HOTEL AND THEATRE Among the more important improvements in Plymouth, the Royal Hotel and Theatre form very conspicuous objects of admiration. Situated in the centre of modern Plymouth, this noble building appears to advantage, and reflects great credit on the architect, John Foulston, esq., under whose superintendence it was erected in the year 1813, at the cost of £60,000, partly raised by tontine and funds from the corporation. Its interior aspect and accommodations are in perfect harmony with its outward character. On the ground flood are the principal tavern apartments, consisting of dining and sitting-rooms, a commercial-room, coffee-room, &.; the entrance to which is under an Ionic portico of four columns, fifty-nine feet in width, and corresponding in its proportions with the temple on the Ilissus, a choice example of Grecian simplicity.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
