The stranger's handbook to Plymouth, Devonport, Stonehouse, River Tamar, and vicinities. Devonport: W. Wood, 1850. Fifth Edition. p. 32.The soldiers stationed in the citadel frequently exercise on the Hoe; and, occasionally, a sham fight may be witnessed. Their band frequently enlivens the promenade, by playing popular airs and overtures. About the centre of the Hoe is erected a camera obscura; and at the eastern end an obelisk, which directs vessels into catwater. [
]Under the Hoe is a landing-place, whence a boat can be procured for a trip to Drake's island and the Breakwater.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
