Polwhele, Revd. Richard. The history of Devonshire. London: Cadell, Dilly & Murray, 1793-1806. Vol. II. pp. 242-3.Cadhay lieth over the river Tale, "which there emptyeth itself into the river Otter. It was the land of the name of Cadhay - not of great antiquity. It came afterwards to one Robert Greenville, whose daughter and heiress Joan was married to John Haydon, esq. who builded there a fair house and enlarged his demesnes. The said John Haydon and Joan his wife, conveyed it unto Robert Haydon, esq. son of Thomas Haydon, his nephew, whose dwelling was at Cadhay, and hath left it to Gideon Haydon his son." - thus Sir W.
