EXETER.On the South Devon Ground at Newton on a perfect wicket, South Devon won the toss and sent in Kay and Hobson to face the deliveries of Jennings and Carter, and a separation was not effected until the score had reached 42, when Kay was caught for a steady 24. Hobson continued to bat in excellent form and compiled 68 before being bowled by Pett. Francis disappointed his admirers being bowled for 8 only, but Jarvis quickly knocked up 18, and with Mapleton and Rev. G. T. Warner in partnership the bowling was completely collared, Mapleton playing a very fine innings of exactly 100, and the Rev. Warner being not out 34. The innings was then declared closed. Exeter made a poor stand against the bowling of Jarvis (7 wickets for 27) and Francis, and failed to reach a hundred. Nicholls [Wyatt-Edgell] (who showed by far the best form), Carter, Jennings, and Drew alone reaching double figures.
