Cooke, G. A. A topographical and statistical description of the county of Devon. London: Sherwood & Co., c.1830. pp.170-1. [
] a picturesque woodland dell appears glittering in its dark recesses, with a succession of silver water-falls, whilst a bleak barren mountain seems to frown above, having a channeled furrow on one of its sides, strongly tinted with a reddish colour, the occasional passage of a fretting torrent. On the little quay on the western side of the rivulets, just below their junction, are a number of decent houses. Beneath the quay is a wear, marked out in the water by parallel lines of long poles, where salmon and herrings are sometimes caught. The beach of Linmouth is bordered by a charming little green. At this little sea-port the Linmouth oysters are shipped for other places, and various necessaries from Bristol imported, for the consumption of the place and neighbourhood.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
