Daniell, William. A voyage round Great Britain, undertaken in the summer of the year 1813 and commencing from the Land's-End, Cornwall. London: Longman & Co and W. Daniell, 1825. Vol VIII. p. 24.KINGSWEAR is represented in the next view, as seen when looking from Dartmouth towards St. Petroch's Church and the Castle. It is surrounded by lovely scenery, and commands a very fine prospect of the entrance of the river, which at this time was enlivened by the presence of numerous vessels, some working in, and others out of the harbour, under a gentle breeze. Those which hold the former course generally run up past Kingswear before they anchor, for the purpose of obtaining effectual shelter from the sea. From the composition of its name, the town may have owed its origin to some sovereign, whose title, however, has not been distinctly specified, or it may have been a part of the peculiar patrimony belonging to the king. [
] Kingswear shares with Dartmouth the advantage arising from its famous pilchard fishery, which yields only to that of Falmouth in extent, and is said to employ upwards of three thousand persons.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
