Scope and Content
Daniell, William. A voyage round Great Britain, undertaken in the summer of the year 1813 and commencing from the Land's-End, Cornwall. London: Longman & Co and W. Daniell, 1825. Vol VIII. pp. 23 -24.The next subject, entitled MR. HOLDSWORTH'S, NEAR KINGSWEAR, was selected as an instance of the beautiful situations in which houses are built on this river. Most of them are so placed as to command highly interesting prospects of those banks which they may be truly said to adorn, and have that air of comfort and elegance which ought to prevail in a residence destined solely for rural retirement. Their aspect is not spoiled by the incongruities so frequently to be met with in the neighbourhood of streams, that are available for the purposes of manufacture and trade, where the miller, the brewer, and the dyer, when qualified, though not quite disposed, to enjoy the otium cum dignitate, contrive with pardonable vanity to give a genteel and stylish look to the buildings in which their business is carried on, so as to assimilate them with their dwellings, and thus blend, in a manner amusingly ambiguous, the useful with the ornamental. Sights such as these a person of independent fortune and fastidious taste would be disposed to shun, and he might settle here without risk of having his antipathies rudely awakened. The villas that overlook the Dart are adapted for the residence of the affluent, and this of Mr. Holdsworth is one of the pleasantest among them. It appears, as seen in the view, to be almost insulated on its rocky site, but it has a very good carriage road to the town of Kingswear, and there is a flight of steps to the river's brink, for the convenience of a water excursion.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
