Scope and Content
Volo non valeo. [Gibbons, Maria S.] "We donkeys" in Devon. Exeter: Henry S. Eland; London: Hamilton, Adams , & Co, 1885. pp. 45 - 46.DAYS THE FOURTEENTH AND FIFTEENTH.[…]. It was with real regret we took our leave of Instow, and looked our last across the stream to the shore where Hubba, the Dane, was buried on the strand after his defeat in 878. Instow, for many reasons, would be a charming place for "head-quarters" from which to make excursions. In the first place, the Marine Hotel is a delightful home-like inn, where in every way the comfort of the inmates is considered, and a choice of many ways of seeing the surrounding beautiful country is offered. You can cross the Torridge, or at certain tides make pleasant excursions on it; then there is the train close at hand, and cheap and convenient omnibus and vans; besides which there is a great variety of beautiful walks on both sides of the river. We took our departure in a spring conveyance - half carrier's van, half omnibus - but very easy, in which for the large sum of fourpence each passengers are conveyed to Bideford. Here, by a most lucky chance, we found the carrier going to Hartland, although it was not his regular day. His vehicle was very easy, and was open, a great consideration, for the drive is a most beautiful one.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
