Tugwell, Rev. George. The North Devon hand book: being a guide to the topography and archaeology and an introduction to the natural history of the district. London: Simpkin, Marshall & Co.; Ilfracombe: John Banfield, 1856. pp. 35, 40.NOTES ON THE TOWN OF ILFRACOMBE.The town formerly consisted of one long and irregular street, about a mile in length, but, of late years, great additions and improvements have been made in commodious and beautifully situated houses and terraces, which provide the principal accommodation for visitors. [
]Beyond Rapparee Cove is a path which leads to the summit of Hillsborough, or more properly "Hele's Burrow;" a name descriptive of its alliance with the little hamlet of Hele, and of its peculiar formation. It is 447 feet in height, and near the summit are the remains of an old earthwork, with a double entrenchment on the land side. The view from the summit is very fine.
