Tugwell, Rev. George. The North Devon hand book: being a guide to the topography and archaeology and an introduction to the natural history of the district. Ilfracombe: John Banfield, 1856. p. 35. The New Church *(S. S. Philip and James). - On the first of May, 1851 (the festival of S. S. Philip and James) the foundation stone of a new church was laid by the Rev. J. M. Chanter, Vicar of Ilfracombe, by whom the sum of between three and four thousand pounds, collected mainly from his parishioners, was expended on the good work from the date of its commencement until the year 1855, when the completion and endowment of the building was undertaken by the late W. Stone, Esq. The church, which was consecrated on the 10th of June, 1857, was designed by the Diocesan Architect, Mr. Hayward, of Exeter. *The late N.V. Lee, Esq., left the sum of six hundred pounds to trustees, for the benefit of this church; the interest to be applied to the building fund, until it was completed, and ever after towards the endowment.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
