Dugdale, James. The new British traveller or modern panorama of England and Wales. Vol. 2. London: J. Robins & Co. 1819. p. 135.The castle was completely ruined during the Civil Wars, [
]. Within the area inclosed [sic] by the walls, a small chapel was erected by the Lady Elizabeth de Fortibus, Countess of Devon, who endowed it with lands, called the Prebends of Hays and Catton, for the payment of certain weekly services therein to be performed. A Sessions House was also erected a few years ago, within the area on the north-west side: this is of Portland stone. The ancient sally-port was in that part of the castle walls destroyed to make room for the new edifice; at the time of building which, the ditch that surrounded the fortress was completely filled up, as many portions of it had been previously.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
