Scope and Content
Burlington, Charles. The modern universal British traveller, or a new complete and accurate tour through England, Wales, Scotland etc. London, 1779. p. 668. Exeter is a large, populous city, agreeably situated on an eminence, on the eastern bank of the river Ex. It was undoubtedly first built by the Romans, as appears by one of the arches of the south gate; and it is very probable that the walls were erected on Roman foundations, there having been great numbers of Roman antiquities found here at different periods.[…] The cathedral, dedicated to St. Peter, is a noble gothic structure, and, like most of our antient churches, was built at different times by the munificence of its prelates. It was begun by Robert Warlewart […], bishop of this see, in 1150, and after receiving considerable additions by several of his successors, was at length completed by bishop Courtney in the year 1485.When it is considered that this edifice was so many years erecting, and executed by different architects, it is surprising to behold its very great uniformity. One would image it had been designed and finished under the direction of the same person, every part being alike uniform, without the least incongruity throughout the whole.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
