Scope and Content
Gray, Todd (ed.) Travels in Georgian Devon. The illustrated journals of John Swete, 1789 - 1800. Tiverton: Devon Books, 1997. Volume One. Journal 2. p. 101.[…] soon after on the Western shore rose the Village of Dittisham; around which the River made such a circuit, as to give a part of the Parish consisting of the Farm of "Court" the form of a peninsula, above which, on a high projecting hill, perch'd before a wood, appear'd a pleasure house, belonging to the Clergyman, than which I can hardly conceive a situation more beautifull. The expanse of the river was here wider than at any other part - it incroach'd [word missing] the West and Eastern shore, on the latter of which was the little Village of Gampton. […] We now enter'd a long regular channel which continued of equal breadth for a considerable space, and from this circumstance it hath the appellation of "Long Stream" - at the extremity of this gut the review of the church tower of Dittisham, rising high [words missing] the trees and the contiguous buildings, was exceedingly beautiful.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
