Cornelius's guide. DAWLISH: historical & topographical with sketches of the most attractive walks, drives and excursions. Second Edition. Dawlish: W. M. Cornelius, 1869. pp. 42-3.Happening casually to visit a farm-house on this spot, about the beginning of the present century, the late Charles Hoare, Esq., brother of the late Sir R. E. Hoare, Baronet, of Stourhead, having been struck with the beauty of the locality, purchased the estate and erected the present noble mansion, of which - Nash, Esq., was the architect. It was commenced in 1800, and occupied four years in building. The style is very tasteful, and uniting an appropriate combination of towers, battlements, pinnacles, and mullioned windows, with the natural beauties and capabilities of the combe, produces a very imposing effect, and justly elicits the admiration of the visitor.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
