Scope and Content
Cresswell, Beatrix F. Dawlish and the estuary of the Exe. Dawlish: R. E. Cann ; London: The Homeland Association, 1902. pp. 21-2.Luscombe Castle, built on the site of the old farm, is one of the most picturesque houses in the county. On every side the park rises towards the top of Haldon; sweeping cedars stand on the lower ground; behind rises the dark shelter of the woods. In this hollow, yet giving no impression of being at the "bottom of a hole," stands the castle. The architect was the famous John Nash, who designed Regent Street and built the pavilion at Brighton. It reminds one of Penshurst, though much smaller than that historic spot. The beautiful grouping of tower, battlement, and mullion is in perfect proportion, and the style of the arched portal especially excellent.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
