Scenery on the southern coast of Devonshire; comprising picturesque views, at or near the fashionable watering places, Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth, Dawlish, Teignmouth, and Torquay. Sidmouth: J.Wallis. 1819.THE BRIDGE AND CANAL, AT DAWLISH.THE interior of this pleasant Watering-Place is seen to great advantage in the annexed drawing: the prominent feature of it is the light and elegant bridge which crosses the canal. This stream, in a dry season very inconsiderable, was so swoln by a long succession of rain, on the 10th of November, 1810, as to become a resistless torrent, and to sweep away in an instant the edifices and improvements of many preceding months. "Eight wooden bridges," says an account publishes in 1817, "and four houses, were swept away or destroyed; and five other buildings, besides stables, were left in such a state of ruin as to be taken down and rebuilt."[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
