Williams, T. H. A guide to the picturesque scenery and antiquities of Devonshire. Exeter: W. C. Pollard, 1830. This town is the most remarkable in its situation from any, except Clovelly, in the county, being on the steep sides of the banks of the Dart, and interspersed with foliage on the different heights. From the end of the open part of the river near Dittisham, it has the appearance of overhanging a fine small lake, as the outlet of the river is not see, from the bend in its course to the sea a little beyond. On the opposite side is the hamlet of Kingswear, having a ferry; the breadth of the river at this part is about a quarter of a mile. The principal feature is the river, and the excursion on it to Totnes, about 10 miles. Market boats go with the tide and return with its ebb - and the boatmen are in general to be found at the inns at Totnes, waiting for passengers by the coaches who are about to undertake this most agreeable voyage.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
