Scope and Content
Mitchell, J. C. Eight views of Cullompton and neighbourhood; together with a concise compilation of explanatory particulars and description. Cullompton: I. Frost, 1851.We next turn to that splendid pile of architecture LANE'S CHAPEL, built in the year 1526 and which will ever immortalize its generous founder. It is connected with the south aisle, by five gracefully pointed arches; the windows are conceived in good taste, and the groining of the roof with its pendant ornaments, challenges the admiration of every spectator.* The founder was an eminent wool merchant of this place, he died the 15th of February, 1528, and is buried near the altar of his own Chapel. The leger stone has been broken and robbed of its six brasses, but the inscription on the margin is clearly legible, viz:-HIC JACET JOHS LANE MCATOR HUIQ QC CAPELLE FUDATOR CU THOMASIA UXORE SUA QI DICT JOHES OBIIT XVO DIE FEBRUARII ANO DNI MILLO CCC CC XX VIII.* See Engraving[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
