Scope and Content
Pulman, George P. R. The book of the Axe: containing a piscatorial description of that stream, and a history of all the parishes and remarkable spots upon its banks; with several illustrations, and a map. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1854. Chapter XI. pp. 423 - 424.There remains, however, dear old friends, a great deal yet to talk about-abundance to beguile the way, when we are trudging Axmouth-ward. The good old town of Colyton, which looms away a mile to the north, its graceful tower harmonizing with the mass of embrowning leaves which cover the delightful landscape, demands no trifling notice. Yea we have a long and pleasant labor [sic] yet.Colyton is a small and ancient market town, in a delightful valley, five miles south-west of Axminster. Along this valley, which opens into the valley of the Axe, flows the sparkling little stream which gives its name to the town, and which is an important tributary to the Axe. The views from the heights around the town are as extensive as they are diversified and beautiful.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
