Scope and Content
Volo Non Valeo. [Gibbons, Maria S.] "We donkeys" in Devon. Exeter: Henry S. Eland; London: Hamilton, Adams , & Co, 1885. pp. 49-50.We must own to being slightly disappointed in Clovelly, but then it must be remembered that we saw it under the disadvantage of unfavourable weather; and though just at the time we descended to the Pier it was fine, yet from going down the steep ascent and getting our garments into a most sloppy wretched state, in our wet and uncomfortable condition, we were little disposed to see things couleur de rose. Clovelly, certainly, is very curious, and well worth spending a day in from Hartland or Bideford; we doubt the wisdom of doing more than this. Looking up at the village from the Pier is the best view of it, no doubt; still, even then, we wondered what twist of the brain induced anyone to select such a spot for human habitations.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
