Scope and Content
Spreat, William. Picturesque sketches of the churches of Devon. Exeter: W. Spreat, 1842.61. Buckland Monachorum.[…] The interior consists of a nave and chancel, north and south aisles and transepts, the former opening into the latter by seven arches on a side. The outer and inner door in the south porch, as well as that in the tower are very beautiful, having a well formed arch with a flat head, over which, on the outside, is a dripstone with terminations, and quatrefoils in the spaces on each side the arch. The ceiling of the nave is well worthy of notice, it is in the form of a round-headed trefoiled arch, divided into compartments by ribs, which are crossed by others running longitudinally, and having richly carved bosses at the intersections; at the points of the foliations is, on either side, a row of carved figures of angels playing on musical instruments. The ceilings of the aisles and transepts are arched and ornamented with ribs and bosses. The font is octagonal, with a quatrefoil containing a shield, placed within a circle carved on each face and supported on a shaft of the same form. Many fine old carved oak benches remain; and some few pieces of stained glass, with which the heads of the windows were, no doubt, at one time filled, may still be seen.
