Granville, The Rev. Roger. The history of Bideford. Bideford: W. Crosbie Coles, 1883. p. 6.But the glory of Bideford is its bridge, consisting of twenty-four arches, and being 677 feet in length. The want of a safe passage across the river Torridge, to and from the east and west portions of the town, had been severely felt by the townspeople for several centuries, the only means of crossing which previously existed being by boats at the ford before adverted; and numberless were the cases in which travellers, chafed at this tedious mode of transit, attempted to cross over by themselves, and, whilst straining for the ford, paid with their lives the penalty of their impatience.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
