[1825?]
Cooke, G. A. Topographical and statistical description of the county of Devon. London: Sherwood, Neely & Jones, c. 1822. p.240. Adjoining Tiverton, on the road to Exeter, is Bickley, rendered remarkable for being the birth-place of Bampfylde Moore Carew, surnamed King of the Beggars; he was bred up at Blundel's school, and reputed a good scholar; his father was at the time rector of Bickley; and, although descended from one of the most ancient families in Devon, and allied to others, yet nothing could draw him from a life of mendicity. He died at a great age, and was buried at the adjoining parish ground of Cadleigh, his body not being permitted to be interred in the family vault of the Carews.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
