Chaplin, J. Picturesque views on the river Exe. Tiverton: J. Chaplin, 1819. pp. 25-27.BICKLEIGH, a pleasant village near the Exe, about three miles and half from Tiverton, and eleven from Exeter, is of considerable antiquity. It was many ages the inheritance of the Courtenays of Powderham Castle. The daughter of Sir Philip Courtenay at his death became sole heiress of Bickleigh, and Sir William Carew was appointed her guardian. Thomas Carew, his brother, won the affections of the fair heiress and privately married her; at her death she settled the whole estate on him and his heirs for ever.[
] The drawing is made from the hill looking down over Bickleigh; a substantial stone bridge of five arches crosses the Exe here, whose banks are adorned with rich slopes and woods, skirted with luxuriant meadows. The vale is deservedly extolled, and strangers fail not to be struck with the beauty of the ride from Bickleigh to Tiverton.[Text may be taken from a different edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
