Mortimore, T. & A. Berry-Pomeroy castle: an historical and descriptive sketch. Totnes: T. & A. Mortimore, 1882. p. xxxiii. The peculiar situation of this castellated relic of bygone times has led the Rev. R. Warner in his "Walk through some of the western counties of England," to observe that;- "Nothing can be more romantic or sequestered than these ruins, which stand on the summit of a bold rising ground, surrounded by distant elevations of still greater height. The deep gloom of venerable woods spreads itself over hill and dale on every side, concealing these solemn remains from the common eye, and reserving them for the investigation of curiosity and the contemplation of taste."[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
