Tugwell, Rev. George. The North Devon hand book: being a guide to the topography and archaeology and an introduction to the natural history of the district. Ilfracombe: John Banfield, 1856. (2nd ed.). p. 31.If the traveller be on foot, or on horse-back, he should take the cliff road from Berrynarbor to Hele, passing through a pretty valley with a trout stream running through it, to Watermouth, (A. D. Bassett, esq.) The Castle stands on a gentle eminence, with a commanding view of land and sea; and immediately below is a sheltered and picturesque cove, which at high-water presents the appearance of an inland lake. The cliff road joins the carriage road at Hele, and will carry us to Ilfracombe by one of the most striking approaches.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
