Scope and Content
Cooke, G. A. Topographical and statistical description of the county of Devon. London: Sherwood & Co., 1830. p. 159. The church is an ancient Gothic structure, situated near the centre of the town; it possesses a remarkably fine toned organ. The Presbyterians, Wesleyan, Methodists, and Baptists, have all places of worship. Besides the fairs and markets mentioned in our list, there are great markets held here for the show of the North Devon breed of cattle, in April and December. The grammar-school at Barnstaple has acquired much celebrity, for having been the place of the earlier education of several distinguished characters, particularly Gay the poet, who was born in this vicinity in 1688, and received his education in this school, which has been established upwards of three centuries.[Text may be taken from a different source or edition than that listed as the source by Somers Cocks.]
