Scope and Content
"Upper" bastion of barbican in the City wall on the S.E. side of the Bishop's Palace grounds, behind No. 1 Southernhay. Photo taken in 1912 by Mr. James Jerman, F.R.I.B.A., immediately before his restruction of it. In rebuilding Mr. Jerman closely followed the original measurements and reproduced the old features. Within or behind this barbican are ruins marked on the O.S. map "Lollards Prison".

The arched opening seen near the top of the barbican was disclosed on the removal of the external masonry from which it was distant about 4 or 5 ft, the interspace being filled with rubble. It has been left in situ.

An arch of similar construction and similarly situated was discovered in the "lower" bastion at the back of Nos. 9-10 Trinity Street.

One copy of Mr. Jerman's Report on these two barbicans, 1st October 1910, is preserved in his office, 1 Bedford Circus, another is in the Diocesan Registry, Palace Gate. For historical account, see "Some studies in the topgraphy of the Cathedral Close, Exeter" by E. Lega-Weekes.
