Accurate surveys of prehistoric sites began to be undertaken in Devon in the first half of the 19th century. Among the early antiquaries to gather information on archaeological finds was W.T.P.Shortt of Heavitree, near Exeter, and this plan of the hillfort on Woodbury Common appeared in Collectanea curiosa antiqua Dunmonia, (Exeter: W.C.Featherstone, 1842).
